From re-keying locks to installing security systems, we have heard almost every question there could be. Below, is a list of FAQS that we thought may help you. If you do not see a question that you are needing an answer to, feel free to contact us. An associate will go over every concern you may be having. We hope that these questions can help.

  1. Is First Defense Locksmith a full service locksmith?
YES! We provide locksmith services for your home, business and vehicle. From lock outs to broken keys and even security system installations. We can handle every job. We will not leave a job until it is finished.
  2. Why should I call a locksmith?
There are many DIY jobs. However, when you want the services done right and professionally, you should always call a locksmith. We can do it right the first time without causing damage to property.
  3. What is a Master Key?
A Master Key is the main key that can function with multiple coded locks. Each key has a specific combination with pins that will only open doors with its own lock. However, a Master Key can be used to open all locks, no matter the pin combination. This is because it is the main key of the entire group. This helps if you have multiple locks and need one key to unlock them all.
  4. Do I need High Security locks at work or home?
YES. It is highly recommended. This is so your home or business will have extra protection. It is a lot harder to get into a door that has high security locks. Opposed to doors without them.
  5. Is it legal to have locksmith tools if you are not a locksmith?
NO. It is illegal to carry tools only available to locksmith. If you are not a professional locksmith company, you may face legal actions if you are caught with these special tools. We strongly advise you not to do this.
  6. My key says DO NOT DUPLICATE. What does that mean?
The key you have that is impressioned with do not duplicate, means that not anyone is able to duplicate the key. This is for security purpose. If that key is for your home, business or vehicle, we must verify that you are the Owner or President of the business, home or vehicle. If you can not be verified, we will not duplicate your key.
  7. Do you cut keys on site?
Absolutely! Our locksmith can cut mostly every key for you. We may not have every key, but we can cut most vehicle keys, all residential keys and commercial keys. If you have a question about a key you have, let us know when you contact us for services.
  8. I locked my keys in the car. Now what?
Call a locksmith. In this case, get yourself to a safe place and call us. Our locksmith will arrive at your location and unlock your vehicle in a timely manner.
  9. Should I change locks if I recently purchased a house?
Not exactly. You do not have to change all the locks, however, you should at least re-key them. You never know who has access to that home. Contractors, Realtors and other owners could still possibly have a key. We can re-key all the locks and they will be as good as new. If you feel more comfortable, we can always just change the locks as well. The option is yours.
  10. Does First Defense Locksmith handle motorcycle keys?
YES. We carry most all motorcycle keys, scooter and cycle keys. We can service tank locks, padlocks, fork locks, re-key, and more.
  11. How can I change the combination to my safe?
We recommend that you change your passcode often. This is so you can keep security for your safe. When changing your code, remember to choose a combination that is not easily guessed. Birthdays, anniversaries and ascending or descending numbers are not wise choices. If you cannot think of a combination, ask your locksmith. We can help you think of something you will remember.
  12. Key stuck in ignition
If this happens to you, we recommend that you leave it alone. Please call us immediately. The more that you move the key, the more damage you could do to the cylinder or ignition. If the key is damaged, we can create you a new one. However, you would pay more to have the old key extracted. If the ignition is damaged, you may have to purchase a new ignition. So please, leave it alone and call First Defense Locksmith.
  13. Are there any keyless entry options for businesses?
Yes. There are numerous options for keyless entry systems that are designed for commercial businesses and customers. The target is for high traffic usage. If you are looking for employee keyless entry systems, we can help with that as well. Many of these types of keyless entry will require an employee to swipe card, have a key fob or push button to gain access.
  14. If I rent a place, should I change the locks?
First, you would need to talk with the landlord to see if this is an option. You may be able to re-key the lock as long as the landlord has the master key. If this is possible we can help. Our locksmith will re-key all the locks and provide your landlord with a master key. That way, you know for sure no other persons will have access to your residence.
  15. When is a good time to change the locks?
If you notice your locks are not functioning properly, that is a good sign to change them. They may stick, jam, not lock properly. Also, another good time is if you are purchasing a new home or lost your keys. You don't want anyone else to have access to your home.
  16. Should all the locks operate from the same key?
Yes. We recommend they should. This will minimize the amount of keys you need to carry to gain access around your home. Also, having one key is more convenient. You won't have to worry about having the right key in your hand to unlock the door. However, if you want separate keys, we can always create a Master Key for you. This will unlock all door locks. See "Master Key" FAQS.
  17. What does it mean by Impressioning?
Impressioning is a term used for a certain technique that allows you to make a key from a blank key. Our locksmith will insert a blank key that will show the markings from the pins. We will then cut the key to match the markings. Then you will have a brand new key within a matter of minutes.
  18. My key is broken in the lock.
If your key breaks inside the lock, do not try to extract it. Leave everything alone and call us. If there are pieces that you have, we recommend that you keep them. This will help us generate a new key. On many occasions, we are able to save the lock. If there is no damage to the lock, we will then re-key the lock to give you a key.
